Cutting Crown Molding For Stair Cases

Video Demonstration

To determine the angle of the miter joint cut required for the downstairs ceiling of your staircase, place the template on the ceiling at the point at which it starts to go up the stairs (fig 13) and lock the template into the required position.

Correct angles for cutting crown molding miters on a staircase

Use the Template to set the pivoting workpiece holders at an external angle (fig 2) and lock the workpiece holders in position.

Special Note

When cutting miters in crown molding for this type of angle, the WALL EDGE that you have marked on the back of the crown molding should be at the FRONT of the tool when cutting (see Fig 15).

Therefore, you must first establish the distance by which your crown molding will be standing down from the ceiling when fixed (see Fig 14)

how to measure crown molding for miter joints on staircases

Having determined exactly what the down measurement 'D' is, you must then locate the guide piece/cam (with the word 'ceiling' on it) at measurement "D" from the back wall of the locked workpiece holder.

It may be necessary to use a timber packing strip (not provided) to arrive at measurement 'D' to suit the selected type and size of your crown molding (fig 15).

The crown molding that is to go on the left-hand side of the miter joint when being cut is located in the left-hand locked workpiece holder with the wall edge to the front.

The crown molding that is to go on the right-hand side of the miter joint when being cut is located in the right-hand locked workpiece holder with the wall edge to the front.

Stairs Ceiling - At top of stairs

To determine the angle of miter joint cut required, take the remplate to the ceiling at the point at which the ceiling joins the upstairs ceiling (fig 13) and lock the template in the required position. Use the Template to set the workpiece holders at an internal angle (fig 1) and lock the workpiece holders in position.

Once again using measurement 'D' as in (fig 14).

The crown molding that is to go on the left-hand side of the miter joint when being cut for your staircase should be located in the left-hand locked workpiece holder with the wall edge to the front.

The crown molding that is to go on the right-hand side of the miter joint when being cut for your staircase should be located in the right-hand locked workpiece holder with the wall edge to the front.
